When the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks first opened in 1916, they were considered an astonishing engineering feat. They still are. This national historic site is host to 1.5 million visitors a year from all over the world. And each year, more than 75,000 vessels and two million tons of cargo pass through the locks.

These visitors line the canal to watch as the locks use as much as 10 million gallons of water to raise or lower tugboats, pleasure crafts, and every other imaginable craft up to 26 feet to compensate for the difference between the levels of Lake Washington and Puget Sound.

At The Canal, you’ll have a deckside view to all the picturesque marine traffic on this historic waterway. And you and your guests will be just a short walk from the famous fish ladder and underwater viewing windows, where Sockeye, Chinook and Coho salmon can be seen migrating through the canal to Lake Washington.
